Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has reached a point where it needs to be at the heart of the design and content of every web page, email or e-newsletter. SEO is no longer a tool just to “keep in mind”, but is fundamental in achieving one of the primary objectives of electronic and internet communication: everyone should be able find it quickly and easily.

SEO is a process of organizing and editing web content that relies on strategic use of relevant words to make the page easy to find for search engines, and consistently appear at the top of the results list every time a web user makes a search. SEO is now a key component in Web Marketing, and there is increasingly intense competition among companies to use SEO to get themselves listed first.

But while SEO sounds like a magical tool, it can also be a double-edged sword. If SEO techniques aren’t applied correctly, they can throw off the search engines, resulting in your site not being listed, or even being considered a source of SPAM.

That’s why SEO is considered a very broad and complex subject. Applying best SEO practices involves a lot of programming code, and has implications for design and content.  It’s not enough just to enroll in the most common search engines, although that’s still essential. You also need to pay close attention to how web content is written, and which words you use. A common mistake is to forget to insert “alts” when coding web content. This is particularly important for companies that send e-mails to cellphones and other mobile devices, which have special coding requirements allowing emails to be read and displayed correctly. As new technologies emerge, and it becomes easier to acquire them, SEO specialization will grow in importance for the mobile sector.

Social Networking is another area where we need to pay close attention. These online communities help make messages viral, and have become a digital version of “word-of-mouth” marketing. Social Networks are an almost limitless source of users, offering a wide range of channels for marketers to get their message to as many people as possible.

So ask yourself if you’re making the most of these new technologies. If you’re not, don’t hang around any longer: welcome to the ever-improving world of the Internet!
